Obituary

The kind and gentle spirit of Walter Haugo, devoted family man and friend, went home to join wife Mary Jo on February 28, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be held Friday, March 8 from 3:30 to 8:00 PM at the church and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Walter Benjamin Haugo was born on July 8, 1923 near Lake Mills, Iowa, the youngest son of Ole and Anne (Heimdal) Haugo. He graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1941, attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for one year, and transferred to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he obtained his DVM in 1945. "Doc" began serving the Litchfield area as a veterinarian that year He treasured relationships with his clients and was dedicated to bringing healing, laughter and great conversation to each call.

Walter married Mary Jo Williams on June 6, 1946. Together they raised four sons, and enjoyed life with extended family and friends. Walt and Mary Jo were active in Sons of Norway, the Litchfield Golf Club and numerous other community groups. Coffee and gathering with the "fish fry friends" were occasions Walt and Mary Jo held dear. Trips to Norway, England and China celebrated their heritage and expanded their world.

Gardening, fishing, hunting, time at Fox Lake and attending the boys' and grandkids' sporting events were highlights for Walt. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Litchfield Lion's Club, a Shriner, city council member and Boy Scout leader.

Walter was known as a master storyteller. He brought wisdom, patience, tolerance, an exemplary work ethic and a twinkle in his eye to each of his endeavors. He was a kind, humble patriarch who, by example, taught us faith, selfless love and joyful living.

He is survived by his sons, Tom (and Jan) Haugo of Eden Prairie, Don (and Pat) Haugo of Ames, IA, Jim (and Cathy) Haugo of Litchfield and John (and Kris) Haugo of Litchfield, grandchildren Joe (and Kelsey) Haugo, Krista Haugo, Brendan (and fiancée Rachel) Haugo, Ryan (and Jessica) Haugo, Walter Jonathan Haugo, Dan Haugo, Tim (and Jenna) Haugo, Rachel Haugo (and fiancé Patrick), Ted Haugo, Laura Haugo, Anna Haugo, Marin Haugo and Ben Haugo, great grandchildren Axel, Owen, and Olivia. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Jo, and siblings, Agnes, Torjus, Amanda, Thora, Rachel, Ted, Ruth, Harold and Amanda.
