Ethelyn Ann Hilsgen, 88 of Watkins, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with interment in the parish cemetery. Fr. Aaron Nett will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and from 9:30 to 10:30 on Tuesday at the St. Anthony Parish Center. Arrangements are with the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
Ethel was born on March 8, 1931 in Watkins to Nicholas and Frances (Schreifels) Donnay. She was united in marriage to Paul Hilsgen on February 9, 1952 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. They resided in Watkins and Ethel was employed as a nursing assistant and housekeeping at Hilltop Care Center for 15 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and a member of the Wat-Kim-Valley VFW Post 5460 Auxiliary. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, sewing, and upholstery. She always had a jigsaw puzzle on the kitchen table and enjoyed watching game shows and old western sitcoms. Ethel especially enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.
Ethel is survived by her children, Paul Hilsgen, Jr. of Sauk Rapids, David (Carol) Hilsgen of Ellsworth, WI, Lloyd (special friend, Stacy) Hilsgen of Austin, TX, Linda (Charlie) Schmitz of Sauk Rapids, Joyce (Pat) Ruhland of Brooklyn Park, Gary (special friend, Dottie) Hilsgen of St. Cloud, Jeffrey (Julie) Hilsgen of Watkins, Susan Unterberger of Watkins, Joseph Hilsgen of Sauk Rapids, Patricia (Scott) Ashburn of New London, Daniel Hilsgen of Watkins; 32 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; sisters, Evelyn (Richard) Decker of Cold Spring, Betty (Harold) Kelm of Eden Valley, MaryAnn (Roman) Stommes of Cold Spring, Teresa (Don) Hetwer of Buffalo; sister-in-law, Lucy Donnay of Wadena.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul in 2002; son-in-law, Allan "Frizz" Unterberger; daughter-in-law, Karlene Hilsgen; grandchildren, Andrew and Jamie; great grandchildren, McKenzie and George plus four great great grandchildren in infancy; brothers, Marcus Donnay and Gerald Donnay; sister, Barbara Kalkbrenner.
