Burton “Burt” Munson, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, after a life devoted to his family and community. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 24th, at Litchfield United Methodist Church, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held in Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield, MN. Officiating the service will be his nephew, Craig Quiring.
Burt was born August 25, 1941, in Waseca, Minnesota, to Burton and Dorothy (Wilson) Munson, and grew up in New Richland before his family moved to Mountain Lake, MN, where he graduated from Mt. Lake High School in 1959. He went on to attend Mankato State University, earning his degree in Education in 1963.
In December of that same year, Burt married the love of his life, Marcia Quiring, and the two began their life together as teachers in St. James, MN. They welcomed four children: Todd in 1964, Scott in 1965, Michael in 1966, and Lisa in 1969. The family put down roots in Litchfield, MN, in 1968, where they would remain for 55 cherished years.
Burt’s career in education spanned many years and left a lasting mark on countless young people. In addition to his early teaching in St. James, he taught math at the junior high level in Litchfield. He also coached wrestling, football, and youth basketball. Following his teaching career, Burt transitioned to sales, spending many years with Jude Candy Company before going on to represent Books Are Fun, traveling throughout southern Minnesota, building relationships with schools and communities along the way.
A longtime member of Litchfield United Methodist Church, Burt sang in the church choir and was also a proud member of the Litchfield Male Chorus. He was a dedicated member of the Litchfield Lions Club for many years, serving as president and in other leadership roles. He was also a lifelong sports enthusiast on the golf course, at the horseshoe pit, and in the bleachers. He followed his children faithfully through every sporting event, which included basketball, football, baseball, softball, and volleyball during their school years, and his support for Litchfield Dragons athletics never wavered long after his own kids had graduated. If there was a game being played in Litchfield, chances are Burt was there.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia Munson of Edina, MN; sons Todd (May) of Farmington, CT; Michael (Heidi) of Edina, MN; daughter Lisa (Doug) Kilkenny, MN. Grandchildren: Sydney, Annika, Tyler, Haley (Kristin), Dylan, Gabe, and brother James (Pam) of Redwood Falls, MN.
Burt was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Dorothy Munson; sister Kay Lisenby; and infant son Scott.
Memorials are preferred to The Dementia Society of America or the Litchfield United Methodist Church.
