Lloyd (LeRoy) Johnson, Born March 20, 1916 Died January 3, 2020, 103 years 9 months 14 days (This is what he would tell you if you asked him how old he was, always kept track.) LeRoy was born 4th in line, (Mildred, Chester, Kenneth, LeRoy, Amy, and Dorothy) to John Sern Johnson and Anne Serena (Sandstrom) Johnson. John S., as he was known, was sent alone at the age of 9 on a boat from Denmark to meet his uncle in America, who promised him a farm. After John’s marriage to Anne, they settled on a farm four miles west of Rosendale, where all six of his children were delivered by a midwife (Mrs. Augustineson). LeRoy was baptized and confirmed at the Rosendale Methodist Church where he had attended for many years. After completing 8th grade at the age of 15, LeRoy left home to join the working world. His first job was as a farmhand working for Nellard Stenberg for $10.00 a month plus room and board. The next farms he worked at were with Hjalmer Nelson, Albert Bendixson, Andreas Knutson, and Willie Hanson. At age 20 (1937) he ordered 2 wedding rings and a beautiful diamond ring (that his daughter in law still wears) for $20.00 from Montgomery Ward catalog. Then, he married Edna Schiro at the Methodist Parsonage in Kandiyohi. They welcomed their first son DelRoy in 1937 and then their second son, ElRoy four years later. He secured the loan from Mr. Hallberg using his 2 sons for “collateral”. Mr. Hallberg said they were each worth a million. Then they moved to Hutchinson and LeRoy worked at Rutz Plumbing and Heating as well as Glencoe Plumbing and Heating from 1959-1975. LeRoy moved to Litchfield in 1975-2020. During later years he did handyman jobs working with Curtis Nelson as well as many hours at his son’s cabin cutting trees, building retaining walls, and a little bit of fishing!
