Marie Louise Rick-Cottington, age 93, of Chaska, formerly of Litchfield, MN, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 26, 2025. A memorial service to celebrate Marie’s life will be held at Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Dassel on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service with a light lunch served after. A private family inurnment will be held at Steelesville Cemetery.
Marie was born on December 8th, 1932, in Dassel, Minnesota to her Swedish parents, Ruth and Herman Peterson. After her mother’s passing, she was raised with the help of her aunts Alfhild and Sigrid on the Peterson farm in Collinwood Township. Marie graduated from Dassel High School in 1950 and upon graduation, moved to Minneapolis. She lived near Loring Park working as a secretary. While in Minneapolis, she rode street cars to and from work but soon decided big city life was not for her and moved back home. A couple of years later, after returning to Dassel, she met the love of her life Richard “Dick” Rick at a barn dance in Darwin, Minnesota.
The two later married in 1956. They lived on the Rick family farm in Forest City Township where they worked together farming and raising their family. She took great pride in her large and bountiful gardens and the animals she helped raise. Over the years, Marie and Dick enjoyed spending time with family and friends. They made many fond memories riding with the snowmobile club, attending Litchfield High School sporting events and playing 500 at card club nights.
Marie worked various jobs in Litchfield. She was a proud home health aide in the Litchfield area, a helper at the Litchfield bakery, a tour guide at the GAR Hall and co-host of a radio show at KLFD with her second husband Bruce Cottington, to name a few. Her favorite “job” by far, was being grandma. Marie’s grandchildren are thankful for many Dairy Queen runs, movie and game nights, and cooking lessons. Her grandchildren were spoiled by the best grandma.
Marie was one of the world's most patient, kind and caring women. She showed everybody how to live their life fully and with love for everything and everyone. She is leaving a large hole in the hearts of many. She will be missed by friends, family and those that helped care for her at Auburn Courts in Chaska.
Marie is survived by her children Barry Rick, Linda (Greg) Mozis and Carl (Dana) Rick and former daughter-in-law Nancy Froiland; her grandchildren, Alex Rick and Quinn (Jon) Orr; Kristen (Kyle Helmbrecht) Mozis, Amanda (Donny) Poplin and Will Mozis; Alayna Rick and Ben Rick; and her great-grandchildren, Logan, Berkeleigh, Hazeleigh, Eliviea and Evelynn.
