Rudolph ""Vern"" V. Benson

R. Vernon Benson, age 88, of Litchfield, MN died on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Meeker Manor in Litchfield. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the Beckville Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Beckville Lutheran Cemetery. Rudolph Vernon Benson, the son of F. Rudolph and Evelyn (Anderson) Benson was born on June 29, 1928 in Litchfield, MN. Vernon was a member of Beckville Lutheran Church, baptized, confirmed, taught Sunday School and served on the church council. He received his early education in District 59 country school in rural Litchfield, then he attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture Farm in 1947. After graduation he returned home to his parents farm and trained with the National Guard. On July 31, 1949 he was united in marriage to Ila Jean Roslien in Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. They lived and farmed northeast of Round Lake from 1950 through 1955. In 1956 they purchased a farm near Beckville where they farmed together for nearly 40 years and raised their family. Vernon was a hard worker and enjoyed all aspects of farming, dairy, livestock, hogs, chickens and crop farming. Vernon also served on school councils, worked custom combining, enjoyed helping his neighbors and fishing locally. Vernon and Ila Jean retired from farming and moved to Litchfield in 1994. He is survived by his children Lynn Stenson of Fresno, CA, Howard (and Terri) Benson of Grove City, MN, Bonnie (and Gordy) Fransen of Lakeville, MN and Sandra (and Bill) Nygaard of Litchfield, MN. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon (and Kristine) Benson, Jeremy (and Angie) Fransen, Joey Nygaard, Andrea (and John) McDermitt, Stephanie (and Colin) Coogan, Meghann (and Paul) Hartley, Bridget Hansen, Jacquelyn Benson, Kim Fransen, Sara (and Virgil) Rick and Cathy (and Tim) Mollet; and 27 great grandchildren; brother Philip Benson of Litchfield, MN and sisters Beatrice Bachman of Coon Rapids, MN and Connie Thor of Litchfield, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife Ila Jean Benson; and brother Harold Benson.
