Eldred N. Froehling was born to Math and Frances (Dockendorf) Froehling on January 15, 1929 in rural Watkins. He attended St. Anthony Elementary School. Eldred married Leila Hennen on June 8, 1950 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church. They farmed one mile east of Watkins where they raised 10 children; 5 boys and 5 girls. After farming and raising dairy cattle for 35 years, Eldred then worked for Ag-Venture (formally Tri County Feeds) until a stroke in September 2019. He then resided at Hilltop Health Care Center. Eldred was an active member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and the community of Watkins. He served as church usher over 30 years. Eldred was a board member many years for St. Anthony School, School Bus Association, St. Anthony Manor, Catholic Order of Foresters and Foresters Incorporated, Watkins Creamery, Watkins Farmer’s State Bank for 25 years, and Watkins AA Group for 24 years. He enjoyed living in a farming neighborhood supporting one another.
Eldred was a man of great faith. He committed his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Eldred treasured his beloved wife of 70 years, Leila, and showed endless love for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed gathering with his family usually ending in games of cribbage, a game he taught his children and grandchildren. Eldred loved nature. He enjoyed sitting in his garden watching the birds perch on the chair next to him. He would quietly sit with bird seed, waiting for them to eat out of his hand. Eldred’s fishing buddies tell us that if anyone was going to catch fish, it would be Eldred. Eldred was a friend to all. He never met a person with whom he could not strike up a conversation as if he had known them for a long time. We will miss his ready smile and twinkling eyes.
Eldred is survived by his wife Leila; children and their spouses Linda (Brian) Arneson, Pat (Bob) Ahlberg, John Froehling, Sandra Froehling (Jerry Kedrowski), Karla (Kermit) Grenz, Tom (Nancy) Froehling, Mark (Lori) Froehling, Craig (Karlene) Froehling, Marcia Froehling, Eric (Paula) Froehling; 23 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; brothers Donald and Joseph; sister and spouse Margaret (Doug) Fobbe; sister-in-law Margaret Froehling; brother-in-law Phil Schreiner; and many nieces and nephews. Eldred was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Bernice (Fabian) Nohner and Diane Schreiner; and brother Eugene.
