Elmer M. Stommes Sr., age 91, of Eden Valley, MN died on Sunday January 10, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 15, 2021 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley, MN. Relatives and friends may call from 9:00 - 10:45 AM on Friday in the Assumption Parish Center. Interment will be in the Assumption Catholic Cemetery. Elmer Michael Stommes was born August 23, 1929 in St. Nicholas, MN to John B. and Mary (Dockendorf) Stommes. Elmer was a spirited, adventurous middle child growing up on a dairy farm with his seven brothers and two sisters. Elmer married Jaletta Theis on April 10th, 1951, in Eden Valley, MN. They worked on and eventually purchased her parents’ family farm between St. Nicholas and Eden Valley, where they became successful in raising crops, livestock and most noteworthy- their 15 children, before retiring in 1994. Elmer was an energetic, hard-working, unassuming, kind and gentle, fun-loving man with a subtle comical side, ready smile, and a wonderful and willing attitude. He enjoyed being with family and friends, singing, volunteering for various church related functions and Meals on Wheels; traveling, church bingo, gardening, playing cards, bowling, fishing & recalling an occasional joke or two. Elmer was a member of Assumption Parish, Eucharistic Adoration Adorer, Knights of Columbus and former member of the Litchfield Male Chorus, Assumption Parish Choir and the Eden Lake township board.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 70 years, Jaletta of Eden Valley; children, Jim (Ann), Lila (Mike) Schmidt, Bernice (Steve) Finne, Elmer Jr. (Mary), Linda (Jim) Thielen, Reuben (Janice), Michael (Delores), Margaret (John) Albrecht, Paula (Gregg) Schleppenbach, Daniel (Darice), Charles (Natalie), Vicki (Ted) Faber and Trude (Chad) Schlangen; 52 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; sister and brothers, Margaret Torborg, Jerome and John; and daughters-in-law Jan and Lynn (Jim) Burg.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Alvin & Vernon; parents John and Mary; sister Marie Kuechle; brothers Alois, Alfred, Ervin, Eugene and Roman.
Memorials are preferred to the Assumption Church Building Fund.
